When people talk about governance, attention often goes to the Governor or the Executive arm of government. However, behind every effective government is a legislature actively crafting policies, ensuring accountability, and giving the people a voice. In Zamfara State, that role belongs to the House of Assembly.
Comprising 24 members, each representing a constituency, the assembly is central to lawmaking and oversight. Its members deliberate on bills that affect education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure in the state. Beyond lawmaking, the assembly has the power to hold the executive accountable through oversight functions, motions, and resolutions.
For instance, after the 2019 elections, when all 24 seats were contested and the APC emerged with the majority, the assembly became a key player in aligning legislative priorities with the executive agenda. By balancing cooperation and checks, the assembly ensures governance is people-focused.
Zamfara’s citizens should not only view the assembly as a distant arm of government but as a body that speaks directly for their interests. After all, each MHA is their elected voice.
