In Nigeria’s democracy, state assemblies often get less attention compared to governors or national politics. Yet, the Zamfara State House of Assembly plays a critical role in everyday governance. With 24 constituencies represented, the assembly ensures that the diverse voices of Zamfara’s people are reflected in the laws and policies of the state.
The assembly’s importance lies in its power to legislate for peace, order, and good governance. It addresses local issues directly—whether by proposing new education reforms, debating budget allocations, or raising motions on security challenges.
Unfortunately, many citizens overlook their state representatives, focusing only on federal politics. This is a missed opportunity. State assemblies are closer to the people and can better address grassroots problems. Knowing your representative, monitoring their performance, and holding them accountable is the foundation of a stronger democracy.
In Zamfara, the 2019 elections highlighted this point when all 24 seats were hotly contested, with the APC winning the majority. Every election cycle reminds us that these seats matter because the individuals who occupy them shape the daily governance of the state.
